On June 30, 2026, Nintendo of America hosted a special Splatoon Raiders Direct ahead of the game’s release later this month. The direct starts with a nature documentary style voiceover from fictional researchers of the Squid Research Lab, explaining the world of Splatoon to new fans or those who need a refresher. Most of the time, players take on the role of creatures called ‘Squids’ who travel as ink but can transform into a human form to use this ink as a weapon. The Splatoon Raiders Direct lasted about eighteen minutes, introducing several new areas, characters, and mechanics.
Treasure Hunting
A key storyline of the game is in Treasure Hunting. Playing as the mechanic, players help Deepcut, a trio of musician pirates, discover treasure. Along the way, however, the team must battle against dangerous beasts called Salmonids. Categorized as ‘Lesser Salmonids,’ Small Fry, Chum, Tong Chum, Spring Chum, and Sparky tend to attack in hoards wielding various kitchenware, setting off explosions, or bouncing on a spring.
‘Boss Salmonids,’ on the other hand, attack alone, but can work together. Salty Tongue deals damage, while Salivator flies around to create whirlwinds. Smoker protects the rest of the Salmonids using fumes, and Scrapper can be stunned by ink. Once a boss is defeated, players are able to pick up “Mega Power Eggs” that fuel the “exploration bot.” A third type of Salmonid called a ‘Seasoned Salmonid’ is similar to bosses, just more difficult to defeat- hence the seasoning.
Weaponry, Gadgets, and Tanks
Over 100 weapon choices are included in Splatoon Raiders, which are “essential for defeating Salmonids.” Some new tools called gadgets are designed specifically with Salmonids in mind, and players are able to equip up to “two at a time” to their tanks. Three new tanks are introduced: the Speed Tank, the Power Tank, and the Tactical Tank. Each of these tanks has a specific use that is aligned with its title.
Aesthetics, Merchandise, and Updates
The Splatoon Direct Raiders also introduced new a feature of the Splatoon and Splatoon Raiders Amiibo figurines. Tapping these figures unlocks special outfits, and for the Splatoon Raiders Amiibos, players can upgrade to the outfit their figure is wearing. Additionally, players can choose from several difficulty settings, and have the opportunity to play both online with friends or solo.
