Next Gen Deus Ex? Square Enix Files Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Trademark

Square Enix, the publisher behind 2011’s highly successful Deus Ex: Human Revolution, has reportedly filed a trademark for what is expected to be the next major entry in the Deus Ex series. Titled Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the trademark was filed on 14 March and entered the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM), which registers trademarks in the EU, on 27 March. Details of the trademark can be viewed on NeoGAF.

One might be inclined to speculate that this new Deus Ex is not a new title for major consoles, but in fact may turn out to be a mobile game or something similar much like the recent Deus Ex: The Fall, which was ported to the PC to tepid reviews. However, a blog post by Eidos head David Anfossi last October suggests otherwise:

“I want to leave you with a piece of concept art [see above] from our next-gen Deus Ex game that shows trans-humanism segregation, which is a backdrop to our vision for the next Deus Ex. It represents a “ghetto-city’ voluntarily built in order to separate the classes. The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment, nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance. This dark and dystopian vision sets the tone for things to come in Deus Ex.”

The constant references to segregation, coupled with the fact that the name of this upcoming game is subtitled Mankind Divided, strongly suggests that this is indeed the title for the next-gen Deus Ex game.

This is  sure to  come as a welcome relief to Deus Ex fans hungry for a new entry to the beloved series. Square recently announced Deus Ex: Universe, a blanket name for a number of related media spin-offs such as apps, books, and of course, games. No other information on this upcoming Deus Ex game exists, but it is a safe bet we’ll hear more about it at the upcoming E3.

To satiate your anticipation in the meantime, you can watch this excellent fan-made short film based on Human Revolution:

Kerwin Tsang: Kerwin has been a gamer for almost as long as he's been alive, ever since he received a Sega Mega Drive in 1989. Having graduated to the upper echelons of PC gaming, he now boasts a number of major gaming accomplishments. These include getting through all three Deus Ex games without killing anyone, clocking in over 700 hours of gameplay time in Skyrim without ever finishing the main story, and nearly shattering every bone in his hand from punching the wall when his soldiers in XCOM missed a shot with 95% chance to hit.
