The Valkyria Chronicles series, a tactical RPG set during the start of World War II in the fictitious continent of Europa, has been a popular franchise since its original release in 2008. Even though the most recent Valkyria Chronicles game was released in North American this year, a new title was announced just yesterday to be in development.
The trailer starts off with a short, two-minute video showing off developers building the new game. We see art assets being created, an interface being created, developers play-testing the game, and collaborating with international figures. The narrator closes off the intro by saying “Our hearts swell with pride knowing we can soon deliver the greatest game in the series into the arms of those who matter most: you, the players.”
The actual trailer reveals that the game takes place in 1935 EC during the second Europan War. The player will be in control of Commander Claude Wallace and Squad E, a squad composed of his childhood friends. The player will lead Squad E on a last-ditch effort to capture the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance capital to end the war for the Atlantic Federation. Fighting on the Eastern front, Squad E will have another enemy, the bitterness of an early Winter.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 will also feature a new class, the Grenadier. The class will be able to fire a grenade gun that has a long range and high ballistic altitude. Grenadiers can fire their weapons to attack over enemy cover, and they can attack enemies not in their line of sight as long as an ally has the enemy in their sights. The class will not be able to attack enemies directly in front of them, however.
In addition, the PlayStation 4 version of the game will have a limited edition for purchase, which comes with the base game, a bonus mission featuring the seven main character from the first Valkyria Chronicles, a 10th anniversary soundtrack, and a 10th anniversary art book. In addition, each first-print game (the first shipment of games) will come with an additional mission that will allow the use of Edy Nelson from the original Valkyria Chronicles to be played in the main story.
Valkyria Chronicles 4 will be produced by Katsura Mikami, the producer of the previous title in the series. The game is expected to come out on March 21st, 2018 for the PlayStation 4 in Japan with a Switch version coming in 2018. There will not be an Xbox One version for the Japanese release, but a release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch are expected for the North American version sometime in later 2018.
