Ah, Suikoden. A game series that was born 30 years ago in 1995 and continued up to around the Playstation 2 era before going underground in 2006, put into Konami’s vault to never be touched again. Until recently, that is. In March of this year, Suikoden I and Suikoden II were remastered and re-released out into the wild in the form of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars, giving the series signs of life after almost 20 years. And now, we have an actual new Suikoden game in Genso Suikoden: Star Leap releasing soon, with a new story trailer released just this week.

For Suikoden diehards, you might be disappointed that Suikoden: Star Leap is not a fully fledged game, but actually a mobile game. A mobile gacha game, at that. We’ll have to see if players will have to spin the gacha to get all 108 Stars that are iconic to Suikoden games or if those 108 Stars are freebies, or maybe the gacha elements will just be costumes and the like.
But aside from the mobile platform and gacha elements, this does look like a fully fledge sequel to the old Suikoden games. You can see returning characters in the preview such as Flik, Odessa and Viktor as seen on the official Star Leap website. Some people have claimed they’ve even spotted Suikoden V’s Georg Prime in the preview.
It’s nice that Konami is giving some attention to their old gaming properties, even if Suikoden is just getting remasters and a mobile game Suikoden fans are probably grateful that their series isn’t just completely forgotten about. It is a shame, then, that legendary Suikoden creator Yoshitaka Murayama sadly passed before he could see the series he created rise from the ashes, but with news of decent sales from Gate Rune and Dunan Unifications Wars and Star Leap’s release coming soon hopefully the series can live up his legacy.
