Owlcat Games have quickly established themselves as one of the go-to companies for adaptations of tabletop RPGs into video game form. After releasing two very successful and well loved RPGs in the form of Pathfinder: Kingmaker and Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, they seem to have moved on to the grim dark future of Warhammer 40,000. My first article here covered the release date of their first Warhammer 40k game, Rogue Trader, and now I’m covering the release trailer of their latest game, Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy.
Given a beautiful animated short to establish the game’s setting, Dark Heresy will have a bit of contrast to Rogue Trader in terms of tone and setting. Whereas it’s all 40k, which means it’s all pretty grim, Rogue Trader was still a bit of an adventure at its heart. Instead of being a wander pirate king like Rogue Traders tend to be, Dark Heresy instead has you take the role of an Inquisitor, a much more serious job at the heart of the Imperium of Man, rooting out heresy and investigating traitors.
Being an Inquisitor has some benefits within the confines of Imperial space, such as having the freedom to have some exotic companions similar to the Rogue Trader. Among these companions are an Eldari corsair and, surprisingly, a Kroot. If you’d like to read up on some of the companions this new CRPG has to offer feel free to visit Owlcat’s Dark Heresy website.
What few gameplay snippets we can see seem to be very similar to Rogue Trader, so this may well be a Pathfinder: Kingmaker to Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous situation where the same engine is used but there are a bevy of quality of life improvements between titles. If this peaks your interest and you want to root out Chaos in the Imperium, then you can wishlist Warhammer 40,000: Dark Heresy right now on Steam.
