Square Enix is officially ready to expand the Octopath Traveler brand. The company has announced that another entry in the series is currently under development for a console release. Along with this, a prequel to the Nintendo Switch RPG titled Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent is coming to Android and iOS mobile devices in Japan at some point this year. It is currently unknown if or when the prequel title will release in the West.
According to the official website, translated via Gematsu, the mobile prequel is set to be a free to play single player RPG. The game will return players to the continent of Osterra, and is set to take place a few years prior to the original game. The game will feature the original’s HD-2D art-style, a full eight character party, and the return of the original game’s field commands.
However, it appears the game will feature one core protagonist that is referred to as the “Chosen One” as they battle a “great evil.” Eager fans in Japan can currently pre-register for access to the prequel mobile game via the game’s official website. Starting March 12, fans will also be able to sign up to receive an early demo of the game from Square Enix.
While fans will get to experience the world of Octopath Traveler again via this mobile entry, the franchise will return to consoles eventually. The official Octopath Traveler Twitter account tweeted out: “Everyone waiting for a new game on console, we’re sorry, but production will take a little while longer, so in the meantime, we hope you can enjoy [the smartphone game]!”
Octopath Traveler released last July to critical and commercial success. Upon release, the game even had issues staying in stock due to the high demand from consumers. In the U.S., the game would then go on to be the best selling game of July. Since then, the game has surpassed over 1.5 million copies shipped and sold digitally. Recently, in Japan and Europe, Square Enix also filed trademark for the HD-2D description of the game’s signature art style.
