Ghost Games and the Need for Speed team have decided that they are, according to them, “doing things a little differently this year,” regarding the next game in the franchise. Yesterday, a post went up on the EA forums by a member of the EA DICE team titled, “Under the Hood: Turning up the Heat.” The post, in summary, announced that a new Need for Speed game was coming out sometime this year.

With the franchise hitting their 25-year milestone this year, the theme of the announcement was the future of the NFS series. “And while we’ve had some great memories over those twenty-five years, we’re not here to look back and reminisce. We’ve got our eyes set firmly on the future,” reads the post. The team understands that the most important things in Need for Speed are the cars and their customization. “These two elements play a pivotal role in the series and are two aspects that we consider to be foundational, meaning they aren’t going anywhere because NFS wouldn’t exist without them.”
In the past, the tradition around this time of year for the series was to make an announcement on their social media channels, but as the post says, traditions can be broken. The team is obviously being very candid about the future release of a new game, but also patient with a full reveal. Instead, they are choosing to instead take it slow which is rather out of character for Need for Speed.
The post wraps up very frankly, leaving fans excited for more without giving much information. “Are you going to hear more about the next NFS title? Yes. Is it being released this year? Yes. Will we be doing anything in June? No. It’s as simple as that.” With no plans for June, this means that Need for Speed will not make an appearance at E3 this year. “With that, know that we’re here, we’re building an amazing game that we can’t wait to show off, and the next time we talk, we’ll be packing our bags and heading south for the full unveiling,” the post concludes.
All in all, the announcement was a simple reminder to fans that NFS is still around and working on a game that will stay true to the foundation the series was built upon. Make sure to keep an eye on the Need for Speed social channels, as well as the forums, for more information on the full reveal later this year.
