That Game Company (TGC) is back with another event for Sky: Children of the Light (2019). This event, titled Dear Van Gogh invites players to “step into the famous paintings to piece together the legacy of Vincent van Gogh and his family.” The launch trailer features several widely known Van Gogh paintings, beginning with Starry Night, which serves as a portal into the artist’s world. Prospective players watch as paint is splashed onto a black and white rendition of Le Moulin de la Galette, which will be a playable mechanic in the game.
Sky: Children of the Light is a “breathtaking open-world adventure” game that allows players to “explore magical realms, restore lost light, and form wordless bonds with [other] players worldwide.” The game’s main objective, however, is to “restore light to a world overcome by darkness,” as well as to uncover lost “memories that shine light on a fallen kingdom.” By doing this, they are able to “free trapped spirits across seven realms, return them to the constellations, and bring life back to Sky.”
In true Sky: Children of the Light spirit, this new add on will not only explore Van Gogh’s art, but also his relationships and mental state. That Game Company is very open about this, with the first line on the event page reading “Dear Van Gogh is an interactive experience that invites players to step inside the paintings of one of history’s most celebrated and most tormented artists.” Very soon, players will be able to experience everyday life as Vincent Van Gogh as they “witness moments of struggles, creative triumphs, and unbreakable family bonds through a powerful, emotional narrative from Van Gogh’s artistic journey.” The artist is never truly alone, thanks to “his brother Theo’s unwavering support, and Theo’s wife Johanna’s courageous quest to share Van Gogh’s brilliant legacy with the world.”
Currently, Sky: Children of the Light is still in Early Access on Steam, likely because of all of the moving parts required to put together a multiplayer adventure game. Because of this, the game and its expansion packs are available for free, either from TGC upfront, or a third party, such as the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5. The trailer for Dear Van Gogh is viewable below, with the event officially starting at 12:00 AM PST.
