For decades, the most popular form of transportation in platformer games has been jumping from platform to platform, but that hasn’t stopped experimentation and innovation within the genre. Developed and published by Super Seeded, Koromi bases its gameplay off of grappling and swinging mechanics which the games’ Steam page claims was inspired by various Spider-Man games. Recently, the game also received its first trailer showing off the mechanic along with various areas throughout the game.
Koromi sees players take control of a koala that can quickly throw out a rope to nearby trees and structures to suspend itself in the air. This alone doesn’t propel the player forward, instead requiring that players build momentum first through a running start or by chain swings together, also requiring that they be careful to consider which angle they grapple from to avoid hitting walls and obstacles. Later in the trailer, more advanced techniques based off of the physics are shown, such are whirling around a tree to reverse direction and build momentum or timing a release perfectly to gain height from a release.
The main character’s journey takes place in a vast wilderness that is disturbed when a flash of light introduces a mysterious red star in the sky. The wilderness is comprised of location of various styles, including a jungle, a desert, and a lake with giant mushrooms. Behind the mystery, the star promises to reveal the truth about the main character’s journey and the truth behind species of its people. These people are also shown off in screenshots of the game from the Steam page, introducing characters like Counsellor Oak, who sends the main character on their way.
Focusing so heavily on a core movement mechanic is how platformers were first designed to become as popular as they did. Time will tell if the focus of Koromi on swinging and grappling will yield similar results when the game releases on PC.
