This week at Tokyo Game Show 2019 Arc System Works debuted a new trailer for the upcoming New Guilty Gear, the game’s tentative title. The game was first announced at the Evolution Championship Series tournament event in Las Vegas in August, and the second official trailer from the Tokyo Game Show’s stage event features franchise staples Sol Badguy and Ky Kiske, along with confirming May for the cast’s roster.
Along with showcasing some gameplay and visuals for Ky and Sol and announcing the more grown-up Jellyfish Air Pirate May for the New Guilty Gear roster, the trailer also shares that more information is expected to be reveled at the upcoming CEOtaku 2019 event in Orlando, Florida from September 27th to 29th. New Guilty Gear is also planning to showcase playable demo during the ArcRevo World Tour Final, which takes place at the UC Irvine Student Center from September 16th to the 17th this year.
Famitsu conducted an interview with Guilty Gear general director Daisuke Ishiwatari and director Akira Katano after their stage presentation for this year’s Tokyo Game Show, which has been summarized in English by Twitter user “Anime FGC News.”
Twitter user HiFight also shared some information about the Famitsu interview in English, shedding bit more light on what changes ArcSys is looking to make to Guilty Gear as the franchise moves forward. It seems like the directors are interested in enhancing the “viewability” of Guilty Gear as an esports title, more than merely simplifying mechanics or “dumbing down” the game for new players. Of course, until more details about New Guilty Gear’s gameplay emerge and the demo becomes playable, it’s hard to say for sure what to expect. ArcSys might attempt something similar to Capcom’s Street Fighter V, where the game is designed in part to appeal to the growing esports environment.
After New Guilty Gear was first announced back in August at EVO, Daisuke Ishiwatari shared some more information, published in English, on the new directions Guilty Gear would take with this next entry into the series via the official Arc System Works Twitter account.
From Ishiwatari’s message, New Guilty Gear might be more approachable to watch and play than previous games in the series, since he states that “new and existing players alike would want to get their hands on” the latest iteration of this unique anime fighter. Ishiwatari and the development team seem to be doing something highly ambitious with New Guilty Gear that could potentially draw in an entirely new, enthusiastic fan base that hadn’t considered Guilty Gear before.
Guilty Gear is set to release sometime in 2020 for the PlayStation 4.
