In June, there were reports suggesting that the Warner Bros. Games division was being shopped around to be sold which meant that games and studios behind Mortal Kombat, Middle Earth, the Batman Arkham series, and more could move to different publisher. Last month, a new report revealed that Microsoft may have been in the mix of potential buyers alongside Electronic Arts, Activision-Blizzard, and Take-Two Interactive Software. Now, it appears that Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment will stay put as a new email by CEO Jason Kilar mentions that “Warner Bros. Interactive will remain part of the Studios and Networks group…”.
The email was sent out to all employees detailing what’s next for the company as we move into the second half of the year. One of the big things that Jason is focusing on and is trying to change is going global and the changes that he has outlined in the email is a big part of that shift.
Talking about three things that he thinks the company should be transitioning to, he spoke to Deadline saying: “This is about going global. We currently have about a third of our revenue that is outside of the US. I think there is a chance for us to have 70% of our revenue from outside of the US and 70% of the consumers that we serve outside of the US. This is what changes today are very much a function of.”
There are three aspects that Jason will be focusing on that is part of their global growth plan. Expanding HBO Max, CNN, and the Interactive business. Kilar said, “I think their ceiling is so high, and I’m very much a believer in news and information around the globe. And frankly, we have the best brand in the world in CNN when we look at website traffic and the power of the brand. Also, we have a very strong interactive team of about 2,000 software developers that tell interactive stories; the opportunity to go global with that is very, very big as well.”
Three upcoming Warner Bros. Interactive games include the Harry Potter RPG that was leaked but was recently confirmed to be coming next year, the next Batman game in the Arkham series that is being developed by WB Montreal, and Rocksteady’s next game, Suicide Squad which will be revealed during the DC FanDome event later in the month.
