Control released in 2019, which despite its lukewarm reception, has been well-received and praised by those who have played the game. Inspired by the popular online “SCP Foundation” stories, it explores a world where a hidden government agency, “the Federal Bureau of Control”, documents and contains otherworldly or supernatural phenomena. The first game sees the player assume the role of Jesse Faden, and explores “the Oldest House”, a brutalist-inspired government building where all these phenomena are being held.
The newest entry in the series, Control Resonant, which was announced back in 2025, showed off gameplay in the latest trailer during the 2026 State of Play. Players now control Dylan Faden, Jesse’s brother/former FBC test subject, as he is sent in by the FBC to stop a powerful reality-altering entity that has taken control of Manhattan. Dylan won’t be alone, as he is assisted by FBC ally Zoe de Vera, as well as returning characters Simon Arish and Emily Pope. Amidst all of this, Jesse is also missing, making Dylan humanity’s only hope against this terrifying cosmic force. Resonant’s story will explore identity, power, and sacrifice, as Dylan strengthens his abilities while learning to confront his past.
Unlike the first Control, Resonant will be more focused on melee combat, with Dylan utilizing a weapon by the name of “the Aberrant”, which is capable of shapeshifting into other armaments. While not open-world, Resonant will allow players to explore parts of NYC and find additional quests, and is built more around action-RPG elements than previous games set in the same universe. According to senior game designer Sergey Mohov, Resonant will be “built around large, distinct, and expansive zones filled with side activities, hidden encounters, and optional discoveries”.
Control Resonant is set to release September 24th of this year, and will be on Steam, Epic Games Store, Xbox, and PlayStation, and will be priced at $59.99 for the standard edition of the game and $69.99 for the Digital Deluxe edition.
