In the pattern of annual releases, Activision’s Blizzard confirmed that a new Call of Duty game will come sometime this year (although a specific due date has not been confirmed).
In their weekly earnings call, Activision COO Coddy Johnson bragged about Modern Warfare’s double-digit rise over Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. They then went on to say that this year’s “premium Call of Duty Title” (which is estimated to come somewhere around October through December) is not scheduled to do as well as the Modern Warfare reboot we got last year.
In that same investor call, CEO Bobby Kotick alluded to more remasters coming soon in height of the success of the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro remakes.
Stay tuned for some future announcements, but beyond pure remasters there are a lot of opportunities now to innovate and think about totally new content within these IPs.
According to the fansite, Activision did not confirm which studio will be developing the popular first-person shooter, but looking at the track record it will most likely be Sledgehammer Games. For an actual confirmation, we will just have to wait and see.
Rumors state that “Call of Duty 2020” will be handled by Treyarch, with Sledgehammer and Raven Studios in the supporting roles. Another rumor states that this will be the fan anticipated Black Ops 5, which could be set to take place during the Cold War after a previous game took place in World War 2.
Despite the rumors and theories, die-hard fans can rest assured that their franchise is in the right hands. As stated by their publisher, “We feel great about the content.” and claiming that the game has brought a “high internal interest” within the company.
It is still unconfirmed if the game will only be available on Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X, or if they will be backwards compatible.
