New 15 Minute Metal Gear Survive Gameplay Demo at Tokyo Game Show 2016

At Tokyo Game Show 2016, Konami released 15-minute gameplay demonstration for the latest game in the Metal Gear universe, Metal Gear Survive. Metal Gear Survive was originally revealed at Gamescom earlier this year and our coverage of that announcement can be read here. The trailer is in Japanese but also has English subtitles. Essentially the trailer goes through one of the missions that the player would normally go through while playing Metal Gear Survive. The trailer can be viewed below.

The trailer goes through a lot of the gameplay aspects that will be a part of Metal Gear Survive. As was discussed before, the game is a multiplayer stealth based game. Metal Gear Survive essentially revolves around co-op/team based missions, where each player is meant to take on a different role. The players are meant to gather supplies, put them to use, as well as complete various missions.  The main enemies in the game, that were shown in the first trailer, essentially work with zombie rules. They are generally harmless on their own, dangerous when they swarm, and when their “head” is destroyed they die instantly.

Worm holes can be used to move various supplies to a base, like in Phantom Pain. Objects like walls and fences can also be strategically placed. The fence in the showcase acts realistically, when too much weight is put on it, it bends and falls over like a real chain link fence would. This touch of realism is a nice little attention to detail and definitely a departure from the video game tradition of fences just exploding when they are depleted. An interesting use for the Fulton Canon from Metal Gear Online is shown. The player uses it to trap a sheep, draw enemies to the noise, and then throw a fire bomb to kill all the enemies once they swarm together. The mission displayed has the ultimate goal of sending out a distress signal before the group has to retreat due to being swarmed by enemies.  Based on this gameplay showcase, Metal Gear Survive seems like a Metal Gear flavored zombie game, where the creatures are not referred to as zombies. This makes the game feel more like a really well made mod than a standalone game. Maybe this explains the fact that the game will retail at $30 instead of the industry standard $60.

Metal Gear Survive takes place after Ground Zeroes, the characters are former MSF soldiers who were sucked into a worm hole during the XOF attack on Mother Base. Where they are taken is some odd limbo where various creatures and objects are also transported via wormholes. They intend on surviving and finding a way back home.  Metal Gear Survive is set to be released in 2017 and will be available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

Carlos Barragan: likes video games. He likes them so much, in fact, that he writes about them. He likes other stuff too.
