Following the incredible success of Black Myth: Wukong released in 2024, developer Game Science revealed details about another game in the series following the adventures of a different figure from Chinese folklore. This time, players will follow the journey of Zhong Kui, a righteous ghost who was once a scholar for the emperor. The new game, appropriately titled Black Myth: Zhong Kui, recently revealed a full fifteen minutes of gameplay from a demo version of the game, filled with action from the title character himself.
The trailer begins with the main characters stepping out of tall grass only to be met by a vast green landscape. In a sequence without any dialogue, he meets an old man whom he explores with and eventually manages to escape with on a raft. As they reach shore with Zhong Kui carrying the old man on his back, they encounter enemies with cloaks wrapped like bandages over deadly wounds, kicking off the combat segment.
Similar to Black Myth: Wukong, combat features real-time juggling of dodges and melee combos against a variety of enemies. The group of foes from the trailer circle the main character and engage him one or two at a time, occasionally swapping out to provide attacks from different angles. Later on, more unique enemies such as hammer-wielders who can break blocks and archer that strike from a distance, can be seen. While swimming, Zhong Kui also finds a large enemy wrapped in a large clamshell, which he must fight on the shore. What follows is a boss battle with multiple phases, each including different attacks that must be reacted to uniquely. During the battle an ally joins the fight, allowing the player to take control of them to deal the finishing blow.
The gameplay trailer ends with a sequence that takes the main character to various locations throughout the game and giving him a chance to meet friends and foes from each of those places. More major updates regarding the progress of Black Myth: Zhong Kui are planned each August 20th with the game currently in early development.
