Pocketpair Publishing and developer Frontside 180 Studio have announced that their 2D metroidvania action title Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse will be releasing on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. Gematsu shares the title will release on its respective PC stores as a full release, rather than its initial Early Access release. A firm date has not been set for the title.
Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse is set in a cursed world containing dungeons, ancient ruins, botanical gardens and a ruined village. Players will assume the role of a cursed hat accompanied by a witch that journeys together through the curse-afflicted world of ruins with the hat’s ability to possess enemies. Their goal is to confront the curse and rebuild the ruined village into a home base.
In Never Grave: The Witch and The Curse players will engage in magic based combat with dungeons and gardens being automatically generated. The cursed hat can gain new abilities through possession and collected materials in dungeons can be used to restore your village, facilities, and crops. Four player online co-op is supported. Players can acquire new abilities through artifacts. The title features a customization system known as ‘traits’ whereby finding new items and spells you’ll activate new passives. Never Grave’s release indicates that it contains “Traditional Japanese hand-drawn limited animation is used for character 2D animation.”
Developer Frontside 180 Studio and publisher Pocketpair appear to want to deliver a polished mesh in the metroidvania and roguelite scene. The title stands out with its unique elements in its possession system, and dynamic passives system. To up the hype, the title is launching with broad platform support and cooperative multiplayer to boot. Those interested need only wait for that release date.
