All good things must come to an end it seems. For the past two years, NetherRealm Studios has been releasing content after content for Mortal Kombat 11. They’ve delivered on this and more, expanding the story line as well as the fighting roster. Now it appears that the studio is officially moving on from the game and looking forward to their future endeavors. The company tweeted that they were “focusing on its next project” adding that the content for Mortal Kombat 11 “has come to an end.”
Mortal Kombat 11 originally launched in Spring 2019 and was critically acclaimed. It went onto be nominated for Best Fighting Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2019, losing out to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. NetherRealm supported the title with Kombat Packs that included new fighters and cosmetics, as well as fixing the quality of life improvements. When 2020 rolled around, NetherRealm expanded upon the story with Mortal Kombat 11:Aftermath, which continued the main plot and introduced a whole new set of fighters to play as.
When the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/Series S launched, NetherRealm again went above and beyond by upgrading the game to take advantage of the new hardware. This new version was dubbed Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition, which was also highly lauded by players and critics. For this, the game was once again nominated for Best Fighting Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020, and this time it won. It’s important to note that just because the studio is ending new content does not mean that they will be ending overall maintenance any time soon. The game till has a lot of life in it, and will more thann likely be a mainstay in the fighting game community for years to some.
As for what their working on next, NetherRealm has not divulged any more information on it. We already know that the studio has some other projects going on, but it’s anyone’s guess as to what this new one could be.
