Netflix’s Gaming Plans Include Adding Titles Like Grand Theft Auto To Its Games Library

As Netflix continues to grow within the Games Industry by looking into playing games on TV with controller app, creatives like Joseph Staten joining Netflix Games, and opening new AAA studio. A new report has shed some light on Netflix’s plans for the future which includes adding big games like a Grand Theft Auto to its library.

Multiple unnamed sources speaking with the Wall Street Journal said that Netflix reportedly discussed licensing from Rockstar in order to release a game in the series. It’s unclear whether or not it would be an old GTA game from the series or a brand-new title. The sources added that while Netflix is “taking steps to expand into higher-end games that can be streamed from TVs or PCs”, the company would also look at adapting their own properties, including shows such as Black Mirror and movies including Extraction.

The sources say that subscribers will be able to play mobile games based on Squid Game, Wednesday, and its Sherlock Holmes series.

The Wall Street Journal reports that less than 1% of Netflix subscribers play their games daily. Only half of the subscribers who looked at the game library went on to download and play games. Despite this, data trackers Apptopia says that downloads have more than doubled over the last year, up to 70.5 million.

One analyst speaking with the Wall Street Journal says that Netflix has spent about $1 billion on games so far. The analyst says that Netflix won’t be slowing down anytime soon as they aim to hire more game executives to oversee a foray into AAA titles.
