A short demo for Glee Cheese and Wired Productions’ Mr. Records has officially been released, as of 6:00 PM Pacific Time. First announced during the Day of the Devs event at Summer Games Fest this past June, the demo for this narrative rhythm game includes about half an hour of gameplay, along with seven complete original tracks. This is only a fraction of gameplay for the completed version, however, which is planned to be released in Quarter 1 of 2027. The full Mr. Records has an estimated run time of five hours, and will include over forty nine original tracks.
It’s always been like that. I just need to hear the first notes of a song. Then, I imagine a world and I travel,
remarks George, an old man who has recently taken up the job of running a record shop as he sips tea on his couch in his underwear. As George, players are tasked with “help[ing] customers find the record that speaks to what they are going through.” The record shop is only open during the day, though, offering George ample time to explore the world inside the music that surrounds him at night.
This exploration is the driving force behind Mr. Records, as it is these “surreal rhythm adventures that unlock new songs, stories and memories.” If George wishes to sell a record to a customer, the player must first know the ins and outs of it- meaning that they must successfully play through it. George would not sell a record he does not truly know, after all. It is selling these records that allows George to purchase more records and expand his customer base.
Each of the seven songs covered in the demo have two gameplay modes, so both new and experienced rhythm game players can experience the world of Mr. Records. The first song, Power of Imagination, perfectly describes George’s situation at the beginning of the game; “Sitting in my armchair and I don’t know what to do,” the song starts, as George is quite literally sitting half naked in his armchair, most likely not knowing what to do. “Traveling without even moving,” George writes. “This cult song from the 1960s is a hymn to the power of imagination.”
The second song, After All, introduces the mechanic of sliding up and down with the rhythm and features a powerful bass line. George describes it as “an ode to friendship, with an energetic feel-good, and very British atmosphere.”
“The first hit by the band Holy Potatoes, this song is about the misdeeds of a butcher who is desperate for sausages,” George writes to describe Sausage Blues. As the demo’s third song, it features a goofy sketch-like background full of cacti, hot dogs, and condiment bottles.
The next track, Get the Funk Up, has an abstract, cotton candy cloud style background. According to George, “this classic funk track from the 1980s is pure good vibes. Perfect for waking up on the right side of bed every morning!”
MYA is electronic and funky, with background art of cats and dogs in bright neon colors. Apparently, as George puts it, this song is about “animal gang warfare. A cat challenges a dog in this catchy and provocative song.”
Another record, Teardrops, introduces the firework mechanic where players must move ticking explosive obstacles that are in George’s way. They tick down on beat, which makes sense for a rhythm game. Accepting Tears:” George writes. “This is the theme of this dark and powerful song about mourning a loved one.”
The final song featured in the demo is Creepy Dancing Ghosts. It is “a ghostly track divided into two very distinct parts: a very funky beginning and a second half straight out of a scary movie,” as George puts it. This distinction is addressed by a rotating portion of the map that players must anticipate.
Mr. Records is about the connections that music creates, the lives hidden inside every record and the simple truth that it is never too late to start living.
If a prospective player wishes to meet George and his faithful dog, Buzz, they are able to download the preview for free on Steam. Currently it is only available for Windows devices, but is playable on Steam Deck. Additionally, once the full Mr. Records game is released in early 2027, it will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 console.
