Motive Studios’ Jade Raymond Leaves EA

Jade Raymond, one of the most influential women in video games, has left Electronic Arts. Raymond founded EA’s Motive Studios after joining the company in July 2015, and has been the studio lead since its inception. In a statement from EA’s head of communications John Reseburg, first received by VentureBeat, Raymond opted to depart Motive Studios as the company places a new executive in charge.

The new head of the studio will be Samantha Ryan. Along with overseeing Motive Studios, Ryan also oversees EA’s Mobile, Maxis, and BioWare studios. This now places all of EA’s North American studios, aside from EA Sports and Respawn, under the watch of Ryan. However, Ryan will still report to EA’s head of global publishing Laure Miele.

“With this change, Jade Raymond has decided to leave Electronic Arts,” Reseburg stated. He would go on to thank Raymond for all her contributions to the company including that she “helped build great teams” and that the company is “appreciative of all her efforts.” Reseburg would also go on to wish Raymond the best in her future endeavors.

Under Raymond, Motive Studios had provided major contributions to Star Wars: Battlefront II‘s campaign along with working alongside Visceral Games on their untitled Star Wars game before Visceral’s closure late last year. She would also oversee the merger between Motive Studios and BioWare Montreal last summer. While Motive Studios hadn’t released a game on their own under Raymond, Reseburg stated that “projects underway at Motive” would “continue unchanged.” It is unknown if Raymond’s influence and vision will still be there once these projects are released.

Before her time at EA, Raymond spent 10 years at Ubisoft. Raymond was a producer on the original Assassin’s Creed game before becoming executive producer on Assassin’s Creed II.  Raymond would go on to help found Ubisoft Toronto in 2009 where she eventually became its executive producer on the studio’s first game, Splinter Cell: Blacklist. She then went on to become the executive producer on the original Watch Dogs.

Zachary Dalton: I have a major passion for video games, the stories they tell, and writing about them. Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player. Attended university to study game development. Wouldn't be who I am today without games.
