Mortal Kombat’s Next Installment Will Reportedly Be A Reboot

New rumors have led many to believe that the next installment in NeatherRealm’s gritty fighting game franchise will be another reboot. Hints at a new Mortal Kombat game were revealed in an earnings call in February, where Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zalzlav confirmed the game’s existence but not much else. However, thanks to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, fans now have better insight on what they can expect from the new game.

Yesterday afternoon, Boon uploaded a strange video of a ticking clock skipping to one alongside the Mortal Kombat hashtag on Twitter. Following Boon’s post, known leaker billbil-kun tweeted information regarding the next Mortal Kombat game, not only revealing the game’s name and status as a reboot but also its alleged retail prices.

Windows Central has allegedly confirmed the validity of billbil-kun’s information through their own sources. Their sources claim that the upcoming Mortal Kombat 1 is set to released for Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC with a September 2023 “launch window” at the earliest. Windows Central sources also allege that the Mortal Kombat 1 character passes will possibly feature popular Warner Brothers characters including DC’s Peacemaker and even Homelander from The Boys. It’s alleged that an official reveal will happen soon, most likely in the coming weeks.

2023 has seen the revitalization of some of the most popular fighting game franchises, with Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6 leading the charge. Mortal Kombat 11 released five years ago in 2019, making the franchise long overdue for a new installment. If NeatherRealm were to do a proper reveal, summer 2023 would be the perfect time with events like the Summer Game Fest and other individual game company events.

Caitlyn Taylor: New media and entertainment have been apart of my life since I was very young, and I don't think that interest will ever go away. When I'm bored, I immerse myself in lore videos no matter the length.
