Illumination Entertainment and Universal’s Despicable Me mobile game Minion Rush has had over 1 billion downloads on iOS, Android, and other devices. The game was created by the video game company Gameloft in 2013 as a collaboration with Illumination and Universal Games and Digital Platforms. This magnitude of this milestone also has a historic element, as it is the first mobile game that is based on a film to surpass 1 billion downloads on iOS, Android, and other devices.
Minion Rush definitely lives up to its name, as it is a game that is completely infested with minions. And those minions are constantly creating mischief of some sort of trouble that the players have to combat in some way. A central part of the game is collecting Bananas, and as of today, fans have collected over 90 trillion bananas, which means they have run a collective 216 billion miles in the game. And they have collectively spent 3.4 billion hours playing Minion Rush since its release in 2013. Just to understand the real magnitude of that number, 3.4 billion hours playing Minion Rush means 387,870.16 years spent playing Minion Rush. Just take in that number for a moment. It is huge.
The creators of Minion Rush wanted to celebrate this huge milestone. They decided they would do it by throwing a huge celebration event. This event begins on June 2nd. And what will this event entail? Well, players will work together to collect 33 billion in-game bananas and to unlock a very unique and special Minions costume. It will also have the long-awaited and requested introduction of two new playable Minions, Bob and Stuart.
The founder and CEO of illumination, Chris Meledandri was questioned about this new development, and when questioned he stated that: “This remarkable milestone is a testament to the strength and longevity of this franchise and our close collaboration with the teams at Gameloft and Universal.”
The mobile game world is the newest medium in the world of video games, and it clearly serves as a unifier for games and companies in the United States and in the world. It is so interesting to see how companies and mediums and games all overlap and become something beautiful in the space of mobile games, and Minion Rush is just one example of that unity.
