Microsoft has finally announced a release window for the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons, the dungeon crawler spin-off of the popular sandbox game. Revealed in a short video, Minecraft Dungeons will officially be coming to Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 in April 2020.
As implied in the title, Microsoft Dungeons challenges players to traverse through dungeons with up to three other players in their party. On their treks, they can hunt for treasure, overcome deadly traps, and fight monsters with different combat styles. Other Minecraft features, such as building and mining, won’t be featured in the game, however, as it will stay true to its genre of dungeon crawler with a focus on exploring, fighting, and collecting. Despite this, Minecraft Dungeons will still appear in the artistic style of Minecraft, with blocky, pixelated characters.
Though no exact release date was revealed in the new trailer, eager players can sign up on Mojang’s website “for chance to play first.” It’s unclear what that exactly entails, but some believe players who sign up may get a chance to play a beta ahead of the actual release.
First announced at MINECON 2018, Minecraft Dungeons was briefly touched upon at E3 earlier this year during the Minecraft Coliseum panel, when it was confirmed to still be in development. Minecraft Dungeons isn’t the only exciting thing joining the Minecraft franchise as of late. The AR mobile spin-off Minecraft Earth was just recently made available for early access players before its full release.
In the decade since its release, Minecraft has been extremely successful, even reaching a new player milestone back in September with 112 million monthly players. Back in May, Minecraft reached 176 million sales worldwide, surpassing Tetris for the bestselling video game of all time.
Minecraft Dungeons will launch in April 2020.
