Microsoft has confirmed it’ll no longer release games on the Xbox One. The news came directly from Xbox Game Studios chief, Matt Booty in an interview today with Axios. The news comes as no surprise, as is eventual that the older hardware can no longer support more demanding Gen 9 titles, moreover saving the hassle for developers who would need their game to run on both the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One.
“We’ve moved on to Gen 9,” Booty stated in the Axios interview. He also confirmed that nobody working at Xbox Game Studios is developing any games for the Xbox One. Recently during Microsoft’s Xbox Gaming Showcase, every first-party game featured would only be playable on the Xbox Series X|S. Newer titles such as Starfield, Fable, and Forza Motorsport were developed solely for the Series X|S.
While the focus on Series X|S games takes formal direction, Booty did also note that the Xbox One will still receive support in the years ahead, be it through updates and other developers who may bring their titles to the platform. Games such as Minecraft Legends and Halo Infinite will still receive updates and support on Xbox One. As well, Xbox Cloud Gaming which provides streaming through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription will still be supported.
