The first ever EVO to occur in France really pulled out all the stops in terms of both gameplay and reveals. We got some real surprises (looking at you Dragon Ball Fighter Z) but for this article we’re gonna focus on the gameplay reveal trailer for Tekken 8’s Miary Zo, shown off during the top 8 of Tekken 8’s tournament (which you can watch here).
The first Tekken character from Madagascar, Miary is definitely a unique fighter to say the least. Probably the first thing people will notice is her, well, magic. A magic with a connection to beloved Tekken alumni Ogre, which puts her at odds against Zafina and continues the tradition of taking old movesets and legacies and giving them to new characters.
Miary’s moveset is certainly as unique as her background, featuring several confusing low hitting moves. Notable is her wall cling, which sticks Miary to a wall and allows her to spring off of it for a diving kick or even a fake out; interestingly, Miary can cling to a wall even if a throw attempt is teched, which is going to make for some interesting and frustrating moments.
But I can’t really continue talking about her without mentioning the Ogre stuff, can I? Miary is possessed either by Ogre or she has some of his power somehow. This givers her the ability to manifest some of Ogre’s powers via True Ogre’s wings, his tail, and his snake arm though Miary seems to mainly use it to summon a staff that she uses as a traditional staff weapon, which she can cling to to perform several low crushing moves and give her reach.
All this, alongside a remixed version of Ogre’s theme, seems to be either heralding the return of Ogre (which some fans have been wanting) or signals the continuation of Ogre’s legacy through Miary. Either way, she looks interesting to say the least, and she’ll be releasing for Tekken 8 come December 4th, 2025.
