Mew-Genics is Once Again Back in Development

According to a recent Tweet by Edmund McMillen, creator of The Binding of Isaac, Super Meat Boy, and more recently The Legend of Bum-boMew-Genics is officially back in development (again). The game was originally announced in 2012 and had more ups and downs than rollercoaster. The game was postponed multiple times, back on track just as many, and even canceled back in 2016. Now it seems that the game is once again back in development, hopefully for good this time.

Mew-Genics, according to the Tweet’s accompanying comic, is a cat-based game whose purpose is still up for debate. The game features the ability to genetically splice different cats together to create better (or worse) cats. Players will be able to breed their cats and fight them, collect them, or both! McMillen described the game himself in another Tweet earlier this year. “Its a cat breeding sim where you hoard them, mutate them and take them on adventures that utilize their abilities. its like animal crossing meets pokemon RTS. it may tie into isaac a bit…”

The game’s development mainly hit stalls while McMillen worked on his other games, plus a brief six-month stint where all of his projects were put on hold due to personal issues. Though the project has been forced to the back burner many times, McMillen always comes back to it, as it seems to mean a lot to him. McMillen spoke highly of the game in a question response on Tumbler a few years back. “trust me when i say im much more excited to work on mew than you are to play it. i think its my best/most interesting design to date and will one day for sure finish it..”

Mew-Genics still does not have a release date, but shouldn’t be expected “for few years.” You can check out the original teaser from 2013 in the meantime. Unfortunately, the website at the end of the video is no longer active.
