Metal Gear Rising 2 Possibly Hinted

At this weekend’s 2015 Taipei Game Show, a Sony video presentation gave a possible clue that a sequel to Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was in the works.

The video presentation was a showcase of sorts for a number of upcoming titles for the PlayStation 4, such as Resident Evil Revelations 2, Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain, and PS4 exclusives Uncharted 4 and The Order 1886.

During a climactic buildup which involved a countdown, the number two flashed on the screen for a brief second. Thing is, this number two was in a stylized font that looked identical to that of Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. You can see for yourself in this video of the highlight reel at around the 1:35 second mark, but don’t blink or you’ll miss it:

Speculation was rife, particularly on NeoGAF, where a user captured the image from the Twitch stream. It might seem a bit of a stretch to extrapolate such a conclusion from such a brief image, but as it turns out, Metal Gear mastermind Hideo Kojima has recently been meeting with Platinum Games, the developer of Revengeance, most recently in December 14, 2014.

Additionally, a survey from the official Metal Gear Solid site asked users last August if they would like to see a sequel to Revengeance. Judging from the positive reception the game received, it’s likely that many fans voted “Yes.”

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance was released in Feburary 2013, with a PC port released in January 2014. It featured a grittier version of the critically maligned Raiden, the primary protagonist of Metal Gear Solid 2 who fans derided for not being Solid Snake. He was much better received in Revengeance and Metal Gear Solid 4.

And speaking of which, whether or not Metal Gear Rising 2 happens or not, fans still have much to look forward to with the impending Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which should be out sometime this year. A PC version is also planned, but no release window has been announced just yet.

Kerwin Tsang: Kerwin has been a gamer for almost as long as he's been alive, ever since he received a Sega Mega Drive in 1989. Having graduated to the upper echelons of PC gaming, he now boasts a number of major gaming accomplishments. These include getting through all three Deus Ex games without killing anyone, clocking in over 700 hours of gameplay time in Skyrim without ever finishing the main story, and nearly shattering every bone in his hand from punching the wall when his soldiers in XCOM missed a shot with 95% chance to hit.
