MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries Coming to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 Later This Month

Looks like Piranha Games’ IP is at long last making its way back to Sony’s home console line. The studio has officially announced that MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will be releasing for both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 and that it will be coming out on September 23, which is only two weeks away. This also marks the return of the MechWarrior franchise to the PlayStation line. The last title released on a PlayStation was MechWarrior 2: Arcade Combat Edition way back in 1997 for the original PlayStation. In short, it’s been well over 20 years.

Obviously with the game making a jump to the PlayStation 5, there are going to be some new bells and whistles that it’ll benefit from. Perhaps the biggest aspect of this is the PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller and its haptic feedback system, which will be in full use here. Another major point is that you are now able to switch between any of the AI Lance BattleMechs in any mission. Prior to this change, you were stuck with whatever BattleMech you were given, or chosen beforehand. On top of that, the game will also support 4-player co-op for the main campaign. You can also play through the DLC mission as long as the host of the game owns any of the content.

For those who have never heard of MechWarrior, the series came to life way back in the early 1990’s where it was only available on PC. The series, which itself is a spin off of the BattleTech franchise, consists of wars being fought with suits called BattleMechs, each with their own unique traits and abilities. The series continued with MechWarrior 2: 31st Century Combat, which was spun into the aforementioned MechWarrior 2: Arcade Combat Edition for the PlayStation. This was followed by MechWarrior 3 in 1999, and then MechWarrior 4: Vengeance in 2000, which received a stand alone expansion in 2002, MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries.

MechWarrior 5: Mercenaries will officially release for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on September 23.
