Rounding out the Square Enix E3 press conference with a heroic flair was Marvel’s Avengers. Releasing worldwide on May 15, 2020, players will initially be able to play as the classic five: Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and the Hulk in an original Avengers story-driven campaign. While no gameplay has been shown just yet, the glimpse into the world of Earth’s mightiest heroes focused on the cinematic and character-driven aspects of the upcoming game, which is a collaboration between Crystal Dynamics, Marvel Games, Eidos Montréal, Nixxes Software, Crystal Northwest, and Square Enix.
The story kicks off in San Fransisco at Avengers Day, where the team is set to unveil their new West Coast headquarters. However, an experimental power source for a new Helicarrier becomes a high-theft target, plunging the city into chaos. When the Avengers are blamed for the catastrophe, the team is forced to disband, only to assemble once again, five years later, as a new and powerful threat emerges. A familiar face in Hank Pym also makes a surprise appearance towards the end of the presentation, popping up to help the team by shrinking down a large mechanical walker.
The game is set to be playable as a singleplayer campaign or as a max four-player online experience. According to Scott Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics, new superheroes and content will be added to the game for free “on a regular basis,” with an added promise of no loot boxes or play-to-win mechanics by Meagan Marie, Senior Community and Social Media Manager of the studio. The game also boasts a strong cast including Nolan North (Iron Man), Troy Baker (Bruce Banner), Jeff Shine (Captain America), Travis Willingham (Thor), and Laura Bailey (Black Widow).
Marvel’s Avengers will release worldwide May 15, 2020, for PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC. PlayStation players will also enjoy a few extra perks, including an early beta, as well as “unique benefits” to be revealed at a later date. You can check out the entire Marvel’s Avengers showcase below.
