Way back in 2017, Capcom’s fighting game division were going through a bit of a rough time. Street Fighter V released with two game modes and entirely negative reception and the latest installment in their beloved crossover franchise, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite, was lambasted from the initial release trailer when fans discovered that it was a shoddily put together Marvel Cinematic Universe advertisement, featuring some Capcom characters. The gameplay, the roster, the character models, and even the tournament scene was a complete mess but now thanks to efforts from some MvCi faithful, a massive mod has come out to rectify at least some of these missteps in the form of Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite & Beyond.
The passion project of popular fighting game Youtuber, Maximilian Dood, who was at one point probably the only person on the internet who liked MvCi (and to this day even defends the vanilla version of the game) Max took notice of many of the complaints the community had of the game. Namely, the artstyle and the MCU flavor. Taking these complaints to heart Max spent a lot of time and money collaborating with other creators to repackage the game with a new comic book style inspired by Marvel vs. Capcom 3 as well as several costumes and stages to better reflect the colorful pages of a comic, even directly referencing classic stages from the MvC series, and not the drab and dull grays and browns that littered the original game. On top of all this, there is a massive OST that you can pick and choose from, featuring a lot of original music from content creators.
Now, while there are some balance changes the mod can’t change game systems from the ground up, so those that didn’t care for the Infinity Gem system will still have those problems. More glaringly, the roster can’t be fixed either, so fans of the X-Men or Dr. Doom or any other character that Marvel was throwing a fit over at the time are out of luck. Still, for those that were on the fence about the game, or those who have never tried the game at all, this is your best chance to jump in as the game is experiencing a resurgence on Steam thanks to the Beyond mod, so there will be plenty of players to test your mettle against.
