Golf is boring. It’s a terrible truth we have to face every time we look in the mirror. However, in the amazing world of video games, anything is possible; even golf that doesn’t bore you to tears! Truly escapism at its’ finest. Mario Golf: Super Rush shot onto the scene last June and has cemented itself as one of the best entries in the Mario Sports series since then, but many fans decried the game for a general lack of content, which is a fair point to make. Upon release, the game contained six 18-hole courses to play on, as well as the battle-golf stadium. This might sound like a lot, but it just wasn’t quite enough to make Super Rush as infinitely re-playable as some other entries in the series, and as such, Nintendo is continuing to add more free content to their game as post-launch DLC to fill it out a bit more.
The first free DLC dropped August 5th, and it is certainly an impressive package considering the price (or lack thereof). This update brings Mario and co. to New Donk City: a brand new 18-hole course. What’s more, New Donk City actually has two different layouts to pick from depending on your skill level, bringing the total number of brand new holes up to a whopping 36. These holes are all par 3 and make creative use of New Donk City’s layout to squeeze all this golfing content into a single map. Be careful, though! The pro course setup is no joke and will likely test even the most seasoned golfers.
If you’re dominating New Donk and are looking for some extra challenge, a new ranked competitive mode has been added to the game as well. This mode lets players pick their course from a set pool and style of golf before pitting them against three other real people for three holes. Reaching A- rank will even unlock new character costumes and color variants month-to-month. If you’re not crazy confident in your skills just yet, there’s no need to worry. Even getting dead last in a ranked match will earn you some points, getting you closer to those sweet sweet cosmetics. This month, Red, Yellow, and Blue Yoshis are unlockable via rank rewards, so hit the green quick if you don’t want to miss them!
Finally, Toadette has been added as a playable character. She doesn’t pack much power, but players will have far more control over her shots than average. For her super abilities, Toadette uses a pickaxe to send her ball flying and tosses radishes at other players as she rushes past. This addition doesn’t come as much of a surprise considering that Toadette’s character model was already in the game’s adventure mode, but it does beg the question: Is Nintendo brave enough to let us play as Birdo?
Mario Golf: Super Rush is available on Switch for $59.99. You can check out the game’s trailer below.
