By now you’ve probably heard of No Man’s Sky if you haven’t then please let us know what it’s like living under a rock. Is it damp? I bet it’s damp.
After a frankly ridiculous amount of hype, the game will finally be out on August 9th for all the world to see. However, there is someone out there who couldn’t wait one more week.
According to Kotaku, a man who goes by the name Daymeeuhn on Reddit paid a princely sum on eBay to get the game early. How much you ask, about $1302.95.
For a game that comes out in a week, you might think that $1300 is a bit much, but Daymeeuhn disagrees. In a Reddit thread, he explained why he made the purchase. Apparently, it was more than just a desire to be the first to play the game.
I’m a lucky guy. I’ve done well for myself. I have disposable income and I’m happy in life. I’m in a state of being where I don’t look at a purchase and determine the overall value by the price tag, but rather by how much happiness it will bring myself or the people I care about. I’m also very much in a weird state of mind half the time in that I’ve seen some shit, and I’ve dealt with loss, and I know all too well that too many of us take life for granted. I could die in a car accident tomorrow – who knows?
That’s all well and good, but once he got the game and verified it was real in an unboxing video the internet wanted to know what the game was like. Eventually, Daymeeuhn started releasing short videos of his time with the game. As you would expect, the videos didn’t stay up for long. He assured Kotaku that video length was on purpose as to avoid spoilers.
I kept my first vids short intentionally. I didn’t want to start delving in to new spoilery stuff too quickly, and I wanted to experience some of that myself first before posting videos to make sure I wasn’t going too far. It was never my intention to fully spoil the game, but rather just give the ‘every man’ vibe of the game that so many people wanted to see.
It didn’t take long for Hello Games founder Sean Murray to respond to the incident.
Once Murray sent those tweets, Daymeeuhn decided that he was done posting videos, for now, telling Kotaku that he felt guilty for starting.
I expected Sean to tweet negatively about it because, let’s face it, it’s his job to. Obviously developers of a game don’t like that early copies make their way out. But I’ll admit, after watching so many of his interviews and knowing how cool of a guy he seems, it did make me feel a bit guilty. It wasn’t the sole reason for my decision [to stop posting videos], but it was certainly a factor.
Daymeeuhn still plans to post more impressions on the game, but they will be tagged as spoilers.
No Man’s Sky will be out on August 9th for PS4 and August 12th for PC.
