Magic: Legends Will Shut Down While In Beta Testing

With many new and exciting changes coming to the Magic: The Gathering franchise, their ARPG video game Magic: Legends is one among the many developments in the works. Magic: Legends is a combat-based game set within The Multiverse that launched for beta testing on March 23rd, 2021. However, on June 29th, Steve Ricossa, the Executive Producer of Magic: Legends at Cryptic Studios, released an announcement that confirmed the game will be shutting down on October 31st, 2021, before its official release.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce Magic: Legends will be shutting down on October 31, 2021… Our vision for Magic: Legends missed the mark, but we are proud of what we achieved.

Magic: Legends, currently only available for early access on Microsoft Windows, will not be receiving a PlayStation or Xbox release at all. This announcement came as surprising news for fans, especially since the game made it so far in its development. Fans speculate that the game’s failure during the testing phase is due to several in-game issues, such as grinding problems and difficulties with gameplay functionality. Most notable among the game’s early access issues was the in-game shop, which was problematic and difficult to manage. However, beta testing is a time for developers to receive feedback and make adjustments, so many players are left wondering why Magic: Legends would decide to shut down now, so soon after its initial release.

Cryptic Studios will not close the Magic: Legends servers until October, however, the Zen Shop within the game, which ran on real-world currency, will be shut down immediately. Players who purchased items within the Zen Shop will receive a refund. The way in which refunds will be issued will depend on how players purchased the items originally. More information about refunds for in-game purchases is available in the FAQ below the cancellation announcement. All items originally exclusive to the Zen Shop will now be available for players to purchase with the in-game currency of Aether.

As of this moment, Cryptic Studios developers have announced within the FAQ that they have no plans to revive the game in any other way. However, Magic: Legends is still available for download and play until servers close on October 31st, 2021. The game is available for free download on Microsoft Windows via the Epic Game Store until its cancellation.
