Lollipop Chainsaw is finally back! After a teaser last month, series producer Yoshimi Yasuda officially announced the game’s brand new remake via a statement on Twitter July 5, 2022.
Made in a collaboration with movie director James Gunn, Suda51, and Grasshopper Manufacture, Lollipop Chainsaw tells the story of Juliet Starling, a high-school cheerleader turned zombie slayer amid a zombie apocalypse. After its initial release in 2012, Lollipop Chainsaw became a cult classic among video game fans for its wild and exhilarating art and bombastic gameplay.
However, as the years progressed, it has become far more difficult for old and new players to have access to the game. After the intriguing teaser last month during the game’s 10th-anniversary celebration, Yasuda finally cleared the speculation around Lollipop Chainsaw‘s future.
“We, the original development staff on Lollipop Chainsaw, think of the game as very precious to us and did not want to leave it in limbo, where players who want to play it cannot. As such, we purchased the Lollipop Chainsaw intellectual property from Kadokawa Games and decided to develop a remake. We have already contacted Warner Bros. about development, and are being supported by them in this endeavor.”
According to Yasuda, despite being under a new developer, the original team will be working on Lollipop Chainsaw’s remake. That being said there will be some key differences separating the original from its remake. Due to the advanced hardware within modern-day consoles, the Lollipop Chainsaw remake “will be taking a more realistic approach to the graphics this time.” The soundtrack will change as well, with the original 15 licensed songs being difficult for them to implement at this time. Instead, aside for a handful of licensed songs, the soundtrack will be mainly comprised of new music.
Despite the changes, fans can look forward to a new, modern version of the cheerleader zombie hunter, when it releases sometime next year.
