A keyboard, mouse, and other computer peripheral producer, Logitech has purchased brand of controller projects from the manufacturer Saitek. Saitek was known for delivering niche products for simulation-based games. Their previous owner was Mad Catz, another peripheral company known for their video game console peripherals. The reason why this is a story is because Saitek is in charge of the creation and distribution of the highly anticipated game Star Citizen. The massively-multiplayer online space flight simulator has been picking up quite a bit of steam as of late, with the reveal of its controller creating buzz around the internet.
Saitek was purchased by Mad Catz back in 2007 for $30 million. It created the two most popular space flight simulation controllers on the market in the X-52 and the X-55, released in 2008 and 2014 respectively. Not surprising to anyone who has used Mad Catz products, an increasing amount of poor reviews citing poor quality equipment with a tendency to break have sprung up since the acquisition.
Following this, it was reported that Mad Catz would need Rock Band 4 to be a hit. as a required notification to its investors. If you were not aware, Mad Catz was the co-publisher to Rock Band 4. This should put the dire state of Mad Catz into perspective.
Logitech has currently not made an official statement regarding the future of the Star Citizen controller. The only comment was made via Polygon, stating that they “…won’t comment on future roadsmaps….However, we do believe this line has yet to reach its full potential.” This should give those anticipating Star Citizen hope of a quality product instead of one plagued by the faults of the X-52 and X-55.
