New Insight Into Nioh at TGS From Director Fumihiko Yasuda

As the Tokyo Game Show continues to move forward, Director Fumihiko Yasuda was brought on stage to talk about the upcoming action RPG Nioh. During the presentation, Yasuda was asked what his feelings where about the similarities between Nioh and Dark Souls.

I can’t say that we don’t know about Dark Souls, that would be a massive lie. We’ve had some influences from them. I would say the biggest difference is that we have a samurai as the main character. We have many members of the Ninja Gaiden production team working with us and bringing in their expertise, and this is shown in the different fighting stances and the use of diverse Japanese weaponry. I think these brings an element of originality to Nioh.

Nioh will be an action RPG set in the 1600’s during the Sengoku period. According to Yasuda  this time period was an age of civil war in Japan including military conflict and social uprisings. The story follows a blonde haired blue eyed European fighting off Yokai, a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and demons from Japanese folklore. The plan was to make the game as accurate to life as possible, including Sengoku generals, weapons, and environments.

Prior to the TGS beginning, Playstation kicked off with a pre- event press conference where Koei Tecmo took to the stage to reveal the release date for Nioh, which has been set for Feb 9th of next year.

Tecmo also released a new trailer of the game showing off some of the game mechanics. The trailer shows glimpses of enemies and environments players will encounter.

Nioh was originally set to be released on the Playstation 3, but last year it was announced that the game would instead move to Playstation 4. Earlier this year Team Ninja also released two playable demos to help move development along. The game will be a Playstation 4 exclusive.
