Capcom has decided to have a bit of fun with two of their most popular blockbuster franchises by bringing survival experts Leon and Claire from Resident Evil 2 over to Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. Capcom hasn’t announced the length of this somewhat unusual crossover event, but players will be able to unlock horrifying cosmetics and skins themed after this year’s hit Resident Evil 2 Remake. The crossover event starts this November.
The Resident Evil crossover content includes skins of rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy and tough college student Claire Redfield with their updated Remake appearances. The trailer also shows off zombies doing the iconic “Thriller” dance, and it looks like these are special player appearances for Hunters during the event instead of enemies. It looks like there are special Tofu weapon charm cosmetics too, referencing the famous extra mode from Resident Evil 2 and the new Remake.
Hilariously the Tyrant, more commonly known as the very scary Mr. X, will also be appearing in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne during the event as a skin for the Handler. It’s very strange to watch Mr. X in the role of doting caretaker.
It’s really great to see a big developer have so much obvious fun with their big franchises, but this isn’t the first time worlds have collided for Monster Hunter World events. Previous events for Monster Hunter World saw the addition of player skins of Ryu and Sakura from the Street Fighter series and Mega Man outfits for the player’s Palico and their gadgets. Outside of Capcom’s own properties, crossover events also brought heroine of Horizon: Zero Dawn Aloy and a number of cosmetics from beloved franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Final Fantasy to the world as well.
The event won’t release for play in time for this year’s Halloween, but this Resident Evil 2 crossover for Monster Hunter World should still make for a frightfully good time. Monster Hunter World is also scheduled to receive a sizable free content update on October 10th that adds new volcanic lands and a monster named Rajang to hunt, an enemy that first appeared in Monster Hunter 2 in 2006.
Monster Hunter World and the Iceborne expansion are available now for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with Iceborne for the PC version scheduled to release in 2020.
