With the monster success of games like PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite, the battle royale genre shows no signs of slowing down. And now, it looks like even tabletop gaming will not be spared from the craze. Introducing Last One Standing: The Battle Royale Board Game.
The Board Game Geek page for the game goes into a little more detail about how exactly this version of battle royale will work. It states that this game will be for 2-8 players, and it will last anywhere from 20-80 minutes to play. The premise is that you are all contestants in a new televised reality show where participants from around the world compete to be the ultimate champion in a life or death battle.
You are all parachuted onto an island and then must compete, kill and loot to stay alive and become the last one standing. Sound familiar? It should. It is a fairly similar premise to Fortnite, and the cartoony graphics in the promotional art also feel like something that could be from the console title.
As you compete, the modular hexagon board will shrink, just like the map does in other battle royale games to force you into more direct competition with your friends. If one on one competition isn’t your style, play with the duo rules and form teams of two to fight to win.
It will certainly be interesting to see if the obsession with battle royale translates well to the board game world. With PUBG and Fortnite as its console influences, and a bit of a Settlers of Catan coming from the board game side, it seems like it would be hard for this title to be anything but a commercial success.
Last One Standing will be launching on Kickstarter on May 1, so if you like the sound of eliminating your friends face to face, get your wallet ready. Follow the game on Twitter and keep an eye on the website for more updates as development continues.
