After months of rumors and speculation, the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake has been officially announced. During the PlayStation Showcase, Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater was revealed. The trailer was filled with many nods to the game and ended with Naked Snake coming out of the shadows. However, there was no gameplay, release date, and no indication who is leading development on it. Another question on everyone’s mind is whether or not creator Hideo Kojima is involved in any way, considering how things ended with Konami and Kojima following the launch of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Konami talked about these things and more in a new interview.
In addition to Kojima’s involvement, many were curious if Yoji Shinkawa, the developer integral with the art of the Metal Gear Solid series. In an interview with IGN, a Konami spokesperson said “they are not involved. However, the development team will work hard to create this remake and also the ports (for Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection) so that they can be enjoyed on multiple platforms by even more players all around the world.”
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 1. was also announced at the PlayStation Showcase. The Collection is the most complete compilation that celebrates the 35th anniversary of the series. The Master Collection allows fans, new and old, to play the games as they were when they first released, now on the latest platforms. Vol 1. features the beginning of the Metal Gear series and includes Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (HD Collection version), and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater (HD Collection version). It’s set for release in Fall 2023.
In the interview, it was revealed that the ones overlooking the remake will be Konami developers who have been “involved in the production of the past games in the Metal Gear series.” They will take on the “central role” and work with Virtuos who has been involved in previous entries in the series and were rumored to be the ones developing the remake. They have also worked on Dark Souls Remastered and Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.
Konami also talked about why they chose to remake 3, what went into the decision of the remake’s title and whether or not more remakes of other entries in the Metal Gear Solid series are planned.
While Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is the third game in the series, it is technically the beginning of the story which is why Konami decided to remake 3 first instead of Metal Gear Solid. “We chose Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater because it depicts the birth of BIG BOSS (Naked Snake), which is the starting point of the Metal Gear series,” a Konami spokesperson said. “Another reason is that many fans have been requesting a remake of this game for a long time.”
The Delta symbol (Δ) was chosen because its meaning fits the concept of the remake project,” a Konami spokesperson said. “Delta is a character from the Greek alphabet that means ‘change’ or ‘difference’ in mathematics and variables, and also has the meaning of changing an amount without changing the structure.”
Speaking of the fans, it seems that they will be the x-factor as to whether we get more Metal Gear remakes or brand-new games. Konami said, “Regarding remakes of previous games in the series other than Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, we will listen to player demand and consider accordingly.”
