The upcoming Killer Instinct reboot for Xbox One is getting a $60 “Pin-Ultimate” edition that will act as a retail release, giving buyers two collectible pins and a display case in addition to the game.
Killer Instinct‘s pricing structure is already unusual. You can download the game for free, but you only have access to one character. $20 gets you the entire starting roster of six characters (or you can buy them individually for $5 each) and $40 gets you the ‘ultimate edition’ which grants you the starting roster, two downloadable characters who will be released later, and a pack of extra goodies with costumes, accessories, and the original Killer Instinct game.
Because all of those purchases are digital, Killer Instinct doesn’t need a physical release. The “Pin-Ultimate” edition is giving it one anyway, though instead of a physical game disc it has a starter kit for a series of collectible Killer Instinct pins. Microsoft has partnered with Penny Arcade to produce a series of sixteen pins, two of which you get to start out with the remaining fourteen available at PAX or Killer Instinct tournaments.
When you break the cost down, the “Pin-Ultimate” edition is worth it if you’re planning to get the ultimate version of Killer Instinct and you think $20 for a display case and two pins is a good value.
