Kenny Omega to Host the Capcom Cup 2019

The Capcom Cup is a little less than a month away, and the spots in the tournament are starting to fill up. Now, an official host for Capcom’s biggest esports event has been named. Last night, Professional Wrestler, and one of the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) Executive Vice Presidents, Kenny Omega announced on Twitter that he will be hosting this year’s Capcom Cup.

For those who are unaware, Omega is an avid gamer, a lifelong fan of video games, and a huge fan of the Street Fighter games. Omega competed in the Street Fighter V Sea Major last year as well as being nominated for Favorite Celebrity Gamer (Athlete) at the inaugural Gamer’s Choice Awards, losing out to NFL player Juju Smith-Schuster, last year. Omega has even incorporated gaming into his ring style by having one of his signature moves named the One Winged Angel after Final Fantasy VII‘s villain Sephiroth’s iconic theme. Omega even had an Undertale inspired entrance and coming out dressed as Sans during the Halloween episode of AEW Dynamite which you can see below:

The Capcom Cup itself will see the Top 32 Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition players in the world square off for over $250,000 in prizes. “It’s more than a championship, the Capcom Cup is the culmination of 17 premiers, 26 ranking events and 11 online events! It’s an epic journey that only the most skilled world warriors dare tread,” reads the event’s description. Currently, there are 13 Japanese players, including last year’s winner Kanamori “Gachikun” Tsunehiro, 5 American players, 4 other Asian players, 3 European players, and 2 UAE players qualified for the event.

The Capcom Cup is set to take place from December 13-15 at the Novo Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Zachary Dalton: I have a major passion for video games, the stories they tell, and writing about them. Avid believer that video games present the best storytelling opportunities out of any media, and that needs to be conveyed. Former competitive Pokemon player. Attended university to study game development. Wouldn't be who I am today without games.
