IO Interactive Loses Funding For its Online Fantasy RPG. Potential Layoffs Soon to Follow

Triple-A gaming has been in a downward spiral recently, with constant game shutdowns, cancellations, studio closures, and layoffs. The gaming industry is truly at its worst in a very long time. And even though a studio can succeed and have a successful game launch, bad news seems to always be around the corner. And in the case of IO Interactive, they recently had a successful launch of the 007 game, selling over 1 million copies in month. But in recent news, they put out a statement about a game they have been working on since 2023, titled Project Fantasy. They have stated that the game has lost an “external partner”, meaning they have lost funding for the game, and the studio will have to make some difficult decisions moving forward, which likely means layoffs.

The news from Io kinda comes out of nowhere, as the company was doing well, as mentioned, with their newest game being successful. “For a good while, it has been all positive news from IO Interactive. We remain humbled and honored by the response to our latest outing with a young, unproven Bond.” However, in the current gaming landscape, good things end much more quickly. “However, today we have to share some more downbeat news. A relationship with an external partner on our own IP, Project Fantasy, has come to an end.”

IO Interactive didn’t outright state who this “external partner” is, but in a statement made to Bloomberg, the company in question stated they were the ones pulling out, which, to no one’s surprise, is Microsoft. Now, due to a loss of funding, IO Interactive must adapt to the changes and make hard decisions. “This means we have to adapt to this new reality and its short-term consequences, including staffing decisions, which is what is happening as we write this update.” It isn’t stated outright that these will be layoffs, but it’s safe to assume that, given the situation, this is the likely outcome.

No matter how you spin it, the situation sucks and reflects the current landscape. Triple-A gaming is on a downward spiral, and nothing seems to change, so it’s important now more than ever to support games you believe in and indie games, as they are becoming the lifeblood of gaming. Though the situation may be bleak, IO Interactive will remain committed and will not stop, which is a light in the darkness.

Project Fantasy is a game, a world, and an IP that we absolutely love and remain 100% committed to, now and in the future. This wonderful universe will see the light of day.”
