If you have played Pony Island, you will know that its developer Daniel Mullins is always up for something bizarre and unique. In October, Daniel Mullins Games released the deck-building horror game Inscryption. The game features a unique gameplay and narrative style and was received well by players on Steam. A few weeks ago, the developers released Kaycee’s Mod, a free mod that emphasizes on the first part of the gameplay, turning Leshy’s Cabin into an “endless, and increasingly challenging, roguelike.”
In Part 1, the game begins as you slowly open your eyes, seeing a dark figure sitting on the opposite side of the table. You can only see the figure’s two eyes hovering in the darkness. The figure then forces you to play cards with them. They give you a starter pack. Though it might seem like a typical deck builder at first, the dark figure would introduce new rules to the game every once in a while. And here you are, facing the dark figure, forced to play a board game you have almost no control over. Also, if you lose to the dark figure twice, it will literally drag you into a room and “kill” you. During the interval of two card games, you are allowed to literally get up from the game table and walk around in the darkroom.
This entire sequence already seems like a complete gameplay experience, but it’s actually only the first part of the game. Once you defeat the dark figure, you will move on to Part 2, which uses a top-down and 2D perspective. While that may sound weird, many players do enjoy Part 1 more. Therefore, Kaycee’s Mod was released to turn this 3D roguelike experience into an endless challenge.
Inscryption was originally released earlier this year in October. It is currently on sale on Steam for $15.99, 20% off from its original price of $19.99.
