Sea of Thieves Has Now Sold More Than 5 Million Units on Steam

It’s been an incredible run thus far for Rare’s Sea of Thieves. The online-open world pirate title has been a very successful endeavor for both the studio and Microsoft, launching as a first-party exclusive for the company in 2018. They’ve since achieved a player base of more than 15 million players, which has since been trounced by new number of 25 million, and released a plethora of content. Now, the game celebrates another major milestone as Rare has revealed that Sea of Thieves has now sold more than 5 million units on PC, for Steam.

As we mentioned earlier, Sea of Thieves was initially only available on an Xbox system, or through Windows on PC. Coincidently, the game was also the very first game made available through Microsoft’s online subscription service, the Xbox Game Pass, which meant you could download it at any time for no additional cost. The game was eventually given a release for Steam on June 3, 2020, where it was very much not a free title and cost actual money to own. In that 18 month time span, the game was able to ship more than 5 million digital units, an insane achievement considering that the game is on the Xbox Game Pass program.

Rare is celebrating this by allowing any player who logs into the game to receive a free limited time emote dubbed All Together Now! This emote will only be available until December 29, which is next week. Sea of Thieves is available now for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X/Series S, and PC through Windows and Steam. The game is currently on sale through Steam for 50% at $19.99 for the Steam Winter Sales event.
