The Call of Duty franchise is no stranger to subfranchises. Starting all the way back to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and recently with Call of Duty: Black Ops, gamers would expect the upcoming Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare to be the start of a new subfranchise and it appears that the developers at Infinity Ward want that to happen.
Previously, Infinity Ward released Call of Duty: Ghosts, but narrative director Taylor Kurosaki told Polygon that Infinity Ward has no plans on bring back Ghosts. However, he did talk about the possibility of new subfranchise:
We want to establish our own new sub-franchise, our own new branch of the Call of Duty tree. What we are developing here could certainly support multiple games. We’re trying to develop a very rich world that we’re not even close to exhausting.”
Kurosaki also says that there is a shift between Ghosts and Infinite Warfare that is equal to the shift between Call of Duty 3 and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, according to Gamespot.
I’m sure that the Infinity Ward team felt the same kind of tremendous burden when they went from World War II to modern warfare,” he explained. “It’s an entire world with new weapons, vehicles, AI, under-the-hood stuff. We’re doing the exact same stuff here. This is as much of a sea change.
Infinite Warfare is set to take place in the distant future where Earth is in guerrilla war with space colonists over natural resources, but is still designed as a military tale rather than a science fiction tale. Previous Call of Duty games have you play the role a newly enlisted soldier, but Infinite Warfare places the player in the role of a battlefield leader, changing up the play style that Call of Duty fans are used to playing, according to Polygon.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is set to drop on November 4 for PS4, Xbox One and PC. I currently wrote about the new zombies mode, which has an interesting new 80s feel.
