Industry veteran writer and voice actor Chris Metzen has returned as Creative Director of the World of Warcraft franchise. A social media post Tuesday announced the return of the 22-year Blizzard veteran in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“…Right now, his main focus is supporting our World of Warcraft leadership in crafting the next generation of adventures,” The post read. “Chris was instrumental in developing the foundations of the Warcraft universe, and we are thrilled for him to re-join our teams in shaping what’s to come.”
“At BlizzCon, he and the team will be sharing what we’ve been working on. We hope to see you there!”
Before his retirement from Blizzard in 2016, Metzen was the Senior Vice President (VP) of Story and Franchise Development at Blizzard, assisting in the creation of the fictional universes of the game company’s most popular franchises including World of Warcraft, Diablo, Overwatch, and StarCraft. Metzen had initially retired from Blizzard in 2016, but he eventually returned to the company as creative advisor in late 2022.
Shortly after Blizzard’s announcement, Metzen quote tweeted the post, expressing his excitement at returning to the company, equating it to “coming home.”
“It’s been amazing working on Warcraft again. Like coming home,” wrote Metzen. “The stories we’re developing right now – how the world unfolds over the next few years… Well, I can’t wait for y’all to see where we’re headed…”
World of Warcraft fans won’t have to wait long to see what Metzam has in store. Tune in or go in-person at the first live BlizzCon since 2019 this November. There Metzen and his team will likely give the world a glimpse on all their upcoming projects.
