Hyper Light Drifter Is Getting A Swanky Special Edition With A SNES Cartridge!

Everyone is readily familiar with the not common (but undeniably unique) quirky indie game special edition doled out by imaginative and eclectic independent developers. Originally funded via a ragingly successful campaign on Kickstarter and released after years of woeful delays, Hyper Light Drifter launched to an awaiting crowd and an overabundance of hype. Fans expected to see raving reviews and saw instead luke-warm approval in the face of overexposed media. Weeks after its release, slowly, the game gained the acclaim it deserved, having since accumulating a 9/10 from Destructoid, a 9.5/10 from Game Informer, and a 9/10 from GameSpot.

However, despite complaints about a lack of narrative backbone in the game, sales and overall reviews have been highly favorable.

Crafted by indie developers at Heart Machine, Hyper Light Drifter is an explorative, action role-playing game designed in a contemporary and dazzlingly colorful 2D to resemble classic 8-bit and 16-bit games. Commonly compared to (excuse the extremely lame but simultaneously extremely apt video game pun) legendary action-adventure series The Legend of Zelda.

To capitalize on the general good buzz surrounding the game, devs at Heart Machine are releasing an extremely fun (and yes, as said before, extremely typical and staple of your high budgeting indie game) special edition package of Hyper Light Drifter. The special edition will be made available for PS4, Xbox One, and all computers with access to Steam and cost $20 USD and is currently on presale. Created  in partnership with iam8bit, the package includes:

  • SNES cartridge
  • 24-page manual,
  • 24-inch by 18-inch world map poster
  • decorative and festive storage box
  • digital code for the game

iam8bit is a company commonly utilized by independent game developers (who also have sold a very poignant and popular/highly recommended OXENFREE special edition) the company has long time supplied specialized merchandized eagled eyed for eager fans, self-described as:

a creative production company that refuses to be pigeonholed, having crafted unique and memorable experiences for a broad spectrum of brands like HBO, Nintendo, PlayStation, Disney, MTV, Activision, Universal, Capcom, Interscope, Warner Bros., Machinima and countless others.

No detail was spared! The SNES-style box, 24-page instruction manual and even the metallic sticker on the cartridge were designed by Hyper Light DrifterHeart Machine to perfectly capture the special essence of 16-bit magic. The cartridge is is custom modeled with colored plastic, replicating the now-defunct production process used back in the day. This is the REAL DEAL.

However, don’t go running to your closet/garage, grab your buried SNES, and plug it in–because the cartridge is for aesthetic purposes only and is not functional. iam8bit isn’t looking to deny you from playing the game, however, and will supply you with a game code!

While looking completely authentic, this cartridge won’t play anything when plugged into your Super Nintendo… but that’s why we’re giving you a game code with purchase!

If you are a huge fan of the game, preorder yours today!
