Sony has announced today that Horizon Forbidden West has sold 8.4 million copies since first releasing last year. The sale numbers came in a PlayStation Blog post celebrating Guerrilla’s 20th anniversary as studio, who are also best known for the Killzone franchise. The blog post also announced that for the Horizon franchise, 32.7 million copies have been sold collectively. The sales milestone for Forbidden West currently makes it among one of the best selling first-party games for the PlayStation 5 system, akin to God of War Ragnarok and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales.
Jan-Bart van Beek, Studio Direct and Studio Art & Animation Director at Guerrilla games stated in the PlayStation Blog post, “Millions more around the world have discovered Horizon thanks to PlayStation’s subscription services and initiatives, including PlayStation Plus, and Play at Home. All told, it’s a milestone we never imagined possible twenty years ago when we first started making games.”
Beek also reaffirmed the recently confirmed news of sequel to Forbidden West, writing, “Last of all, I’d like to share that we are so excited that Aloy’s adventures will continue. Her latest mission takes her to the ruins of Los Angeles in Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores, and we can’t wait for you to find out where she’ll go next.”
The Horizon franchise recently saw its debut into VR with the PlayStation VR2 game, Horizon Call of the Mountain. It’s unclear currently the sale numbers directly from that title, however the blog post indicated that the Horizon franchise has amassed a total of 32.7 million units worldwide. Despite releasing last year, Horizon Forbidden West was recently made available to PlayStation Plus Extra members. This came ahead of the Burning Shores DLC which saw Aloy venture into post-apocalyptic Los Angeles, and saw Lance Reddick’s character, Sylens, in one of his final roles before his passing in March.
As teased in the blog post, Aloy’s adventure will continue into a third mainline title. Guerrilla confirmed that an “online project set in Horizon’s universe,” is in development with “unique stylized look.” There’s also been rumors that Horizon Zero Dawn will be getting a remaster of the 2017 game. The rumored news flummoxed fans, as Zero Dawn was already a technical marvel for the PlayStation 4 Pro and still remains a graphical beauty.
Horizon Forbidden West is available for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores is available only on PlayStation 5.
