During the PS5 reveal event, Horizon Forbidden West was revealed. Not much has been revealed since then. Guerilla Games did talk about how they plan to utilize the power of the PlayStation 5 and it was tentatively revealed that the game will be going later in 2021. Nothing official has been announced yet, but earlier this week, Guerilla and PlayStation announced new State of Play focused on Horizon Forbidden West and the gameplay reveal for the highly anticipated sequel.
There are a number of new things coming to Horizon Forbidden West. We got a look at some of the new machines that Aloy will have to contend with and a new enemy faction that was teased in the teaser trailer. We also got to look at some of the new gameplay mechanics that are being introduced in the sequel.
Close combat has been revamped with new combos. New traversal options include the Pullcaster that speeds up climbing, getting her quickly out of trouble. The Shieldwing allows Alloy to safely descend from great heights or surprise enemies from above. The Diving Mask allows Aloy to stay submerged in water and allows her to explore a whole new underwater world. An update to the Focus shows areas that allow Aloy to free-climb and override more machines for mounts or combat. New weapons/tools include adhesive grenades that can be fired from slingshots, throwable spears that explode on impact after a short period, and a tool that can quickly cause a distraction so you can escape from danger and regroup.
Horizon Forbidden West picks up six months after the events of Horizon Zero Dawn. Aloy has traveled west to investigate a mysterious and deadly blight that is destroying the Earth. In these uncharted lands, she will meet new tribes and encounter ever more deadly machines. Together with old friends and new companions, Aloy must brave this dangerous frontier to find the answers needed to save life on Earth.
The gameplay reveal also provided the first look at a rebel faction of a new tribe called the Tenakth. They are vicious fighters that have acquired the ability to override machines. New machines coming to Horizon Forbidden West include Sunwings in the sky, Clawstriders and Tremortusks on land, Snapmaws and the Burrowers in the water. Many more will be revealed throughout the massive open world of Horizon Forbidden West.
Regarding a release date for Horizon Forbidden West, Guerilla Games said, “We don’t have an exact release date yet, but development is on track and we’ll have an update for you very soon.”
