Hogwarts Legacy Surpasses $1 Billion In Sales, PS4 And Xbox One Releases Announced

Hogwarts Legacy has made over $1 billion in retail sales according to Warner Bros. Discovery CEO Davild Zaslav at it’s first quarter earnings call Friday morning. Zaslav also announced the launch of Hogwarts Legacy’s PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions this Friday and the Switch for July 7th.

“Hogwarts Legacy has amassed more than $1 billion in retail sales and over 15 million units sold worldwide to date, and today the team is launching the game on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms,” said Zaslav, according to Video Games Chronicle (VGC).

According to Zaslav, with Hogwarts Legacy’s flying past $1 Billion dollars in sales and selling “over 15 million units worldwide,” that makes it Warner Bros. Discovery’s fifth $1 billion-plus gaming franchise alongside  Mortal Kombat, Game of Thrones, our Lego games and DC.

Warner Bros. Discovery’s CEO of global streaming and games JB Perrette added his high hopes for the upcoming Nintendo Switch release in the earnings call. While the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One releases are important, thanks to Harry Potter’s popularity in Japan, they expect  it to do far better.

“We see that as probably a much bigger install base and a fan base that, as relates to the franchise of Harry Potter,” said Perrette. “which obviously appeals to a very big audience globally, and in markets like Japan where Nintendo has a big footprint and Harry Potter skews very strongly in terms of popularity, we see a much bigger upside probably from that release, certainly than the Gen 8 [PlayStation 4 and Xbox One release]”.

Hogwarts Legacy remains one of the best-selling games of 2023 so far, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s biggest game launches to date, with 12 million copies sold in its first two weeks. While the game has been riddled with controversy, mainly due to the transphobic views of the franchises author J.K Rowling, its likely the game’s sales will continue to grow.
